A cold cathode gas discharge ion pump has been used as a leak detector and found to operate satisfactorily. Argon, helium, oxygen, and hydrogen have been used effectively as probe gases with argon usually giving the greatest response. Leaks from 10-3 to 10-8 std cc/sec could be located in a few minutes and leaks as small as 10-10 std cc/sec or 10-7 μliter/sec could be detected.
