The transportation systems for highways and arterials in the U.S. have advanced from a collection of independently operating devices to highly interconnected, far-reaching and integrated systems. These integrated systems require a reliable communication network that spans a broad geographical region. Transportation systems are not only becoming more connected, but also more dependent on communications and information technologies. In addition, recently, our society has become more "networked," with traditionally isolated control systems connecting both to business networks and with each other.
