The pressure surrounding the King County International Airport/Boeing Field paving job would make some companies want to run away from the runway. But ICON Materials stuck around-and finished the job-a full day ahead of the customer's final deadline. It was a good thing, too, because the firm would have been fined $15,000 for every hour the runway remained closed past the deadlines set by the county. But all the goals were met, and the results are impressive: 106,400 tons delivered from the plant, placed on the runway and compacted at or exceeding specified densities of 98% on the runway and 96% on joints. The demands on the crews, truckers and plant were immense, with three pavers working day and night-and as many as five crews double-shifting as each deadline neared. "Believe me, this was a pressure job," said Bryan Southards, assistant transportation and equipment manager at ICON Materials, Auburn, Wash.
