Nearly seven miles of Rte. 5 in Camden County, Mo., is the largest grading project in the history of the Missouri Department of Transportation (Mo-DOT). The road realignment project included construction of four major bridges, two interchanges, grading and extensive drainage systems, along with excavation of more than 7 million cu yd of soil and rock. Topography and the geology along the alignment challenged the contractor by affecting access to jobsites. These challenges had to be overcome to accommodate the timely delivery of concrete pipe from Cretex Concrete Products Midwest Inc. Some of the installation sites were so difficult to access that the contractor had to bulldoze temporary roads to get delivery trucks to the jobsites. Over two miles of reinforced concrete pipe ranging from 12 to 90 in. in diameter under various fill heights and 1,350 ft of boxes were shipped to the project. The MoDOT pipe design included 42-in. to 90-in.-diam.-thick wall reinforced concrete pipe that would carry fill heights into the 100-ft range.
