In 1958 the International Group was the first specialist group to be created within the Road Haulage Association. Back then few firms moved outside the county. The first section of motorway was not yet completed (the south section of the M1 was opened in 1959). There were few roll on, roll off ferries, no mobile phones or tachographs, no single market, the state had a large role in road haulage, no one worried much about the environment, and the economy had yet to fully expand after the austerity of the '40s and '50s.
