For over a decade there has been a pervasive suspicion that the days of field artillery may somehow be numbered, and that the decline of that arm is mandated by prevailing trends in technology, tactics and changed strategic requirements. To some, artillery has come to appear old-fashioned, inappropriate to operational needs and even a liability. It is, after all, associated with heavy weights of imprecise fire against area targets, causing serious collateral damage which may even make it unusable in the ever-changing legal and moral context of contemporary operations.
