As an estimated 400,000 crew remained stranded on board vessels across the world, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Global Compact, and the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights issued a joint statement on 5 October calling for urgent action. The IMO said that around 400,000 seafarers are currently stranded on vessels, continuing to work and unable to return home; while a similar number of people are stuck onshore, unable to get to their ships to work and earn a living. The COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on travel and transit have severely affected seafarers. They have become "collateral victims of COVID-19-related measures imposed by governments", the statement said as it called for the current crisis to end. Measures such as "travel bans, embarkation and disembarkation restrictions, or suspension in the issuance of travel documents have severely strained the working conditions in the global shipping sector", it said.
