Hazard identification has been the subject of many safety training courses and campaigns for maritime companies for years. It is not surprising that some seafarers have an impression that this subject is too trivial, quick to understand, or does not even require much training. During the actual work on board ships, hazard identification is sometimes taken for granted because of the crew members' belief that they are already familiar with the tasks. Given that time is so precious, and they have plenty of other things to do, they would rather do the job right away than spend any more time to think, discuss, and identify the hazards. Others simply have the compliance-driven mindset where they do this because it is part of the requirements. Some may fill out the relevant risk assessment forms without serious considerations, and believe that having it signed and filed will make them look good, especially in the eyes of safety managers, auditors, and inspectors.
