The US Marine Corps has announced that it is to procure 80 conventional take off (CTOL) F-35C's as well as the planned 340 short take-off and landing (STOVL) F-35B Joint Strike Fighters. The Commandant of the Marine Corps, Chief of Naval Operations, and Secretary of the Navy, have signed a memorandum of understanding on tactical aircraft integration, incorporating a plan to provide | five Marine Corps squadrons with F-35C, the carrier-based variant of the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, to the Navy's carrier air wings.
