Aircraft took off from forward airfields of 2nd Tactical Air Force for patrols over the front line. Their task was to repel any raid by Germany's new jet bombers, the activities of the which were becoming more and more common. Indeed, on 2 March 21 Arado Ar 234s left Achmer 2. Two of the machines belonged to Stab./KG 76, led by Oblt Robert Kowalewski, and the remainder to III./KG 76, led by Maj. Franz Zauner. Their task was to attack Allied positions in the area of Maastricht-Aachen-liilich. The bombers were escorted by aircraft from JG 27, namely 71 Messerschmitt Bf 109K-4s from III. and IV./JG 27, based at Hesepe and Achmer. Older Bf 109G-14s from II./JG 27 at Hopsten also took to the air.rnAbove the target - British tanks at Dueren - the Luftwaffe met RAF Spitfire Mk XIVs of No. 41 Sqn and Tempests of No. 222 Sqn. In the ensuing air combat both sides scored victories and suffered losses. Overall, the Allies fared better.
