摘要

Today's classroom is different from the classrooms parents remember. Educators understand that changing societal needs and new brain research helped generate new standards-newly focused on access and process skills as well as content knowledge. Parents, however, are left to wonder why science and mathematics have changed so remarkably. As guest editors of this focused issue of School Science and Mathematics, we hope to raise concern for parents' limited opportunity to embrace new, reform teaching and learning in science and mathematics. We argue that parents' clear understanding of the new standards will both improve student learning and engage parents as science and mathematics advocates. Four areas of research (described below) highlight our primary concerns.
