Integrating the Three Dimensions of Next Generation Science Standards: Issues and Solutions for Authentic Assessment of Student Learning

As called for in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report, Developing Assessments for the Next Generation Science Standards (NRC, 2014), there is an urgent need for significant change in the mind-set of educators regarding assessment techniques, particularly with integrated dimensions of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in learning environments. Educators will need to shift their understanding of assessment from one-time, content-only assessments to creating assessments of student learning that have multiple ways of allowing students to show their competency in content, practices, and thematic understanding. Not only will educators need to shift their mind-set, but they will also need to be prepared to develop these new types of assessments to respond to the NAS report recommendation that assessments be developed "'bottom up' rather than 'top down'" (p. 8).
