Carol L. Smith, Marianne Wiser, Charles W. Anderson, and Joe Krajcik (this issue) have laid out an appealing vision of standards-based assessment in their article, "Implications of Research on Children's Learning for Standards and Assessment: A Proposed Learning Progression for Matter and the Atomic-Molecular Theory." They propose a world in which standards, instruction, and assessment are centered on students' understanding of fundamentally important scientific ideas, which students are expected to develop at increasingly complex levels over the course of a coherent K through 12 curriculum.
