Albert Einstein was awarded the 1921 Physics Nobel Prize for the theory of photoelectric effect. He has established the special theory of relativity (1905) and the general theory of relativity (1915) as well. Einstein is so much associated with the theories of relativity that common men perceive these as some sort of a philosophical idea; often the students and others feel that he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on relativity. The general theory of relativity although more sensational, was not readily accepted even by the scientific community till 1919 when Arthur Eddington and his collaborators proved its predictions during a total solar eclipse. So the Nobel Committee in 1922 while announcing and awarding the 1921 Physics prize to Einstein mentioned that he has been awarded the Prize 'for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect'. There was no mention of other theories in the Nobel citation.
