摘要

It was a sultry morning in September when we arrived at LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) located at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad and we were met with the usual picture of any hospital in its prime hours with patients thriving all around, the only difference being that all patients starting from babies to aged were with affected eyes only. This visit was made possible by the courtesy of Prof. D. Balasubramanian (popularly called Balu), Director of the Institute. I was so impressed by the services that the institute was rendering to the masses that my immediate reaction was to at least present a brief note in Science and Culture on the model followed by LVPEI in its work and some of the special services it provides, which makes this institute unique in its class. As agreed, Balu will write two other articles on the finer details of different aspects of the institute. Incidentally, Balu was on the Editorial Board of Science and Culture for five years and continues to be one of the Editorial Collaborators of the journal.
