摘要

Tagore wrote a letter to his artist friend Rothenstein in June 1937. 'With the ruthless freedom of an invader, I have been playing havoc in the complacent and stagnant world of Indian art and my people are puzzled for they do not know what judgment to pronounce upon my pictures. But I must say, I am enjoying hugely my role as a painter.' He was by then an established painter, many exhibitions of his paintings were held in his own country and abroad. His passion for a new art medium almost at the end of his life aroused surprise and doubt, a mixed reaction, which is still prevalent. On one side shower of praise, on the other, strong dislike - the reaction is divided. But Rabindranath Tagore as a painter does not allow his viewers to get distracted and unmindful. His paintings always attract attention and occasionally give a jolt. Tagore himself was well aware about these reactions, this is evident from the aforementioned letter. We can feel that 'playing havoc' 'with the ruthless freedom' gave him immense pleasure.
