White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), a DNA virus, which causes white spot syndrome (WSS), a fatal disease in shrimps has been causing major losses to the shrimp culture industries in several countries since 1992. Early detection of the virus will help in taking proper management steps to control the incidence of WSS outbreaks. Out of several methods of detection of WSSV, PCR method is much more sensitive and can detect 10 target molecules (viral particles). WSSV in shrimps from different hatcheries and farms along Orissa coast have been detected by PCR technique with utmost precautions.
