This paper examines Singaport's economy and the need to adopt advanced manufacturing technologies to compete in the increasingly intenationalised marketplace. The OECD countries are already repositioning their manu- facturing strategies, and Singapore would do well to do likewise. Among other things, Singa- pore is presently enhancing its R&D capabili- ties to match that of the OECD countries. The crucial role played by the government in dev- eloping R&D capabilities and a world-class manufacturing infrastructure is discussed.
