Creativity of many kinds plays an apparently evermore central role in post-industrial society. How does creativity work? What fuels it? How does it relate to other aspects of society? Some of these crucial questions form the subject of Elizabeth Currid's The Warhol Economy: How Fashion, Art, and Music Drive New York City.rnThis is an amazingly accomplished book for a scholar under 30. Situated at the intersection of standard economics, sociology, cultural studies, the sub-discipline of 'creativity studies', anthropology, and city planning, the work required some fluency in all these disciplines. For an effort of scholarship in such fields, the writing is lucid and straightforward, little given to jargon, often refreshingly informal and personal, and, sometimes quite entertaining. Not only has Currid gone far in mastering a complex literature, she has conducted numerous interesting interviews and performed statistical analyses to support some of her main points.
