[E1] To cling to a strap on a jam-packed street-car while being pushed and poked, crushed and trodden upon, is-to a person like me, with a somewhat damaged body and, as a consequence, weakened nerves nearly unbearable suffering. And the effect lasts not only while one is on the streetcar but for hours after getting off. In recent years, ever since coming down with an intractable chronic illness, I have made a point of never get-ting on full streetcars. I ride only ones that aren't crowded.
