Buzby expects to see increased activity for his Mariners and fleet over the next decade as the Navy finds ways to operate under a tighter budget. That could be a challenge, because he also anticipates the pool of Mariners from which he can draw to remain small. MSC operates 110 noncombatant, civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions - such as assisting in the resupply of an Air Force base in Greenland - strategically preposition combat cargo at sea and transport military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners. Buzby, who took over his post in October 2009, graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 1979. As a surface warfare officer, Buzby made numerous deployments aboard cruisers and destroyers. He also served on the Navy staff as the Point Defense Anti-Air Warfare section head for the Surface Warfare Division and as Aegis Combat System development officer. As a flag officer, Buzby served on the Navy Staff as deputy for Surface Ships, deputy for Surface Warfare and deputy for Expeditionary Warfare. He also served as commander, Joint Task Force Guantanamo, and most recently as deputy chief of staff for Global Force Management and Joint Operations, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. Buzby discussed current MSC operations and future challenges facing the agency with Associate Editor John C. Marcario.
