Not surprisingly, the game evokes strong passions, as seen following the 1893 Navy 6-4 triumph when a rear admiral and brigadier general engaged in fisticuffs at Washington's Army and Navy Club that nearly escalated into a duel. Following that confrontation, the two service secretaries suspended the annual match, and a cooling-off period of five years ensued. Overall, such competition contributes to service self-esteem. Although an annual football game always grabs national attention, representatives from the Army, Navy and the other service branches are continuously contesting for bragging rights whether it be in marksmanship, cooking, skydiving, golfing or basketball, to name a few.
