Commodore Uriah P. Levy (1792-1862) always knew he wanted a career at sea and joined the United States Navy where, unfortunately, he found religious discrimination. He could have left and had an easier life. But he was physically and mentally tough and was devoted to the United States Navy where he became a war hero and a crusader for justice. Uriah's ancestors are traced to the Inquisition. This was a general tribunal for the suppression of heresy and took place in Spain, Portugal, their dependencies, and a part of Italy.1 Uriah's ancestors had to flee Portugal.2 Uriah's maternal grandfather, Jonas Phillips, settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.2 Uriah was born in Philadelphia on April 22,1792 to Rachel and Michael Levy.
