There may be a time delay before any cargo multiplier effect of the widened Panama Canal on regional ports manifests itself, according to Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) md Stacy Hatfield. Cargo volumes at Panamanian ports slowed down and it may not be until 2017, after restructuring of liner alliances has taken place and the widened Canal is fully operational, that a turning point will be reached, he predicts.
