Sensor Platforms was founded in 2004 "to be the world's leading enabler of sensor applications, providing technologies that both reduce the cost and time of sensor application development and improve sensor performance." The company commenced development of its products in 2002 as a unit of PNI Corp, a producer of sensor-based consumer products. In 2004, with the completion of the first generation of its suite of products, Sensor Platforms spun out of PNI to focus exclusively on serving the sensor application development market. PNI is a significant minority shareholder and a customer.
