When the coronavirus pandemic hit the world earlier this year it literally brought parts of the shipping industry to a standstill. Crew changes were forced to be abandoned due to local lockdown restrictions in many parts of the world, oil prices fell off the cliff and the need to adapt to new ways of working had never been so great. Many companies needed to adapt, and quickly. One area has seen exponential growth is the use of remote surveys, with some arguing they will even become the new norm. With it not being deemed safe to allow inspectors onboard vessels, many vessels have been granted extensions to the time for surveys to take place, but classification societies decided to make better use of the technology which was already available.
