摘要

In August 2011, New Jersey along with much of the Northeast braced for the impacts of Hurricane Irene, which in the days leading up to its arrival was touted as the most significant storm to impact the region in the past 150 years. Indeed, the governors of both New York and New Jersey issued mandatory evacuation orders for low lying areas in advance of the storm's arrival. Fortunately, a short excursion over land in North Carolina significantly weakened the storm prior to its making a second land fall along the southern New Jersey coast. While the high winds and intense rainfall caused significant damage throughout the state, Irene's coastal impacts were decid edly less severe. Post-storm surveys conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection concluded that overall the damage was less significant than that which occurred less than two years earlier during the Veteran's Day or "Friday the 13th" Northeaster. A comparison of the two storms is useful because it highlights several of the factors which in general combine to make northeasters more damaging to beaches in the northeastern United States. Two of the most significant factors are believed to be storm duration and cumulative seasonal impacts. The term "cumula tive seasonal impacts" refers to the fact that northeasters tend to occur in the winter, when the beaches are lower and typically more vulnerable as a result of previous storms. Hurricanes on the other hand tend to occur in the summer when beaches are widest and highest, and most ready to absorb the impact.
