摘要

The 13 November 2009 ("Friday the 13th") storm - also called the Veterans Day storm and "Nor'Ida" in the press - was remarkable in its duration of high water level and intensity of waves. Reformed as a northeaster or extratropical storm from the late-season Hurricane Ida that traversed the Gulf of Mexico; this triskaidekaphobia-inciting storm mimicked the "Perfect Storm" of 1991 in surprise and severity. Beaches from Virginia to New Jersey suffered unexpected erosion. This editorial introduces four papers discussing this unusual storm and associated damage to the beach.
