A severe and unusual storm occurred in mid-November 2009 that brought significant storm surges and near-record breaking waves to the coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. Beach erosion and flooding occurred at levels that had not been seen since a series of northeasters impacted the area during the 1990s. The storm's unusual genesis began from the remnants of Hurricane Ida, a November tropical storm that was the second latest hurricane to make landfall along the Gulf coast in any year in the historical record. The remnants reformed as a northeaster along the coast of the eastern United States in similar fashion and impact to the "Perfect Storm" of 1991. As the storm slowly intensified and moved toward the north, its waves and storm surges eroded beaches from the Carolinas north to New Jersey, with extreme conditions occurring at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Directly in the path of the storm was the Atlantic Coast of Maryland Storm Protection Project, a major beach nourishment project at Ocean City, MD. The project was originally constructed in 1989 and has withstood many severe storms. This paper describes in detail the characteristics of the "Friday the 13th" storm of November 2009 and its relative severity and impacts on the project at Ocean City, MD.
