It has been a joy and a privilege to serve as the guest editor of this issue covering Hurricane Irene. Since my namesake caused such a ruckus, I felt obligated to take the lead on covering the storm in a productive way. Beyond the name, the storm seemed to speak to me. Upon the completion of my developmen tal assignment at the Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, MS I began the trek back to Concord, MA, to the New England District. The storm provided close company on the journey, which included an earthquake in Virginia. The path of the storm roughly followed my drive up the east coast and provided the perfect entrance back to Massachusetts.
