Beach nourishment has recently been a topic of considerable debate in the United States. Much of Use debate has revolved around the predictability of beach-fill performance. Has beach nourishment cost the American taxpayer dearly while nourished beaches have eroded much more rapidly than predicted? Are coastal processes so complex that rational beach-fill design by engineers is hopeless? These questions have been posed and answered in the affirmative by critics of beach nourishment. However, their criticism is largely based on anecdotal information from a limited number of beach fills, and the validity of the criticism even for these fills is questionable.1 What has been needed to shed light on the debate is information on beach-fill performance versus expected performance for a large number of fills over a long period.
