摘要

When I first wrote this editorial, I had just returned from the ASBPA annual conference in San Diego. Since then, Sandy made its way up the eastern seaboard changing hundreds of miles of coast and millions of lives. The detailed effects of Sandy, varying known as Hurricane Sandy, Tropical Storm Sandy, or Superstorm Sandy, have are still being investigated, but the consequences have been tragic and the recovery, in whatever forms, will take years. There are already conceptual ideas for recovery being discussed in the media that range from super-sized mega-barriers to "design with nature" options using building code revisions, green building, smart growth, localized protection, open space, and beaches for community-by-community protection.
