Manhattan Beach, California: Width determination from a century of images

Twenty-seven images of Manhattan Beach, CA, were compiled covering a span from 1913 to 2011. Sources included the Manhattan Beach Historical Society archives, the California Coastal Records Project, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Google Earth. The images were used to determine long-term beach width temporal variation. All images included the Manhattan Beach Pier. Beach width was determined by one of two methods: 1) Scaling historical images of the beach using the known length of the pier or other objects in the image; or 2) Using the "ruler" distance measuring tool provided on the Google Earth image toolbar. Unlike much of the California coast, Manhattan Beach has resisted long-term erosion and has, in fact, more than doubled in width over the past 100 years. In-depth research of pertinent Santa Monica Bay literature was conducted to determine how, why, and when this wide, sandy beach was formed, and why more recent images show the width to be relatively stable. It concludes that Manhattan Beach is mostly manmade and is a major coastal engineering success story.
