Orville Magoon has been working on the coast of California for more than five decades, with contributions in many areas. He is noted as a leader in establishing the concept of "sand rights" and advancing the awareness of California's tsunami risks. He won the ASBPA's prestigious O'Brien award in 1994. The interviewer has worked with Orville for about 12 years on coastal issues and several coastal conferences.rnI grew up on the coast in Hawaii. While I was in high school, Professor Francis Shepard of Scripps Institute of Oceanography at La Jolla, California, stayed in our house because the April 1, 1946, tsunami had destroyed the house he was staying in on the windward side of Oahu.
