At the Open University, we have, for a number of A years, been investigating a variety of issues relating to the design and implementation of remote electronic examinations with the ultimate goal of offering students the opportunity of taking a traditional proctored exam at a location remote from their institution. Not only is such a system beneficial for distance education purposes, it is of benefit to students, allowing them to take an examination in a less stressful environment. Normally, students travel to one of over two hundred examination centres to take proctored examinations. In our context, a traditional proctored examination is one in which student answers are free form; that is, they are textual, and not a selection from a given list as would be found with multiple-choice questions. A main aim of Our research is to mark the answers automatically and provide feedback to the students. Ideally, such feedback would be given as soon after the examination as possible, but in accordance with the examination policies of the institution. However, capturing answers to examination questions electronically has several inherent benefits, not the least of which is the legibility of the answers, a boon to both students and graders alike who can more easily decipher what has been written. Students also appreciate the ability to edit their answers as they arenas anxious as anyone to provide comprehensible answers.
