摘要

This article argues that children were prominently featured in the abolitionist literature for East Africa primarily to appeal to the sentimental instincts of European readers. It examines a number of different sources dating from the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by both Europeans and Africans. While not all sources from this period on children and slavery were overtly sentimentalized, in the context of the abolition movement it is not surprising that most were. At the same time, it suggests that however filtered through European interlocutors these accounts are also valuable to historians because they provide a space for African voices to be heard.
