It is good to see Jessica Chapman's important study, first published in 2013, reissued as a paperback. It forms part of an emerging Vietnam-centred historiography of Vietnam, or Vietnam Studies, that moves well beyond the large number books and monographs that continually ask whether the United States might have 'won' the war with a different kind of strategy (Vietnam War Studies). Both schools of historians continue to debate, though, the support base, legitimacy, and administrative range of the South Vietnamese state established under Ngo Dinh Diem in the wake of the partition of Vietnam in 1954. While generally accepted as an authoritarian regime, the Diem family dynasty has been subject to rival historical interpretations, especially on its capacity to modernise a largely peasant society.
