Cet article résume la contribution de Trevor Farrell en matière d'analyse du problème de chômage dans la Caraïbe : de ses premières tentatives d'estimer le taux de chômage, à son étude de la problématique plus large du développement. Ayant étudié la contribution de la génération précédente, Farrell a trouvé leurs approches insuffisantes et s'appliquait à développer une stratégie plus appropriée pour transformer les économies caribéennes à la fin du XXème siècle. L'article trace l'évolution du travail de Farrell dans son affrontement au défi, et trouve que finalement il a réussi à bâtir sur les fondations posées par les perspicacités de Lewis en construisant une approche plus pertinente à l'économie mondialisée dans laquelle l'avantage concurrentiel est conféré par l'acquisition et l'application stratégique des connaissances. A cet égard, Farrell pourrait être appelé : « Lewis version 2.0. »%This paper reviews the contribution of Trevor Farrell in the analysis of the unemployment problem in the Caribbean, from his early attempts to gain precision in estimating the level of unemployment to his examination of the broader development issues. Having reviewed the contributions of the generation before him and finding their approaches deficient, Farrell sought to develop a strategy more appropriate for transforming Caribbean economies in the late 20th century. The paper traces the evolution of Farrell's work as he grappled with challenge, and finds that in the end, he succeeded in building on the insights of Lewis in deriving an approach more relevant to a globalised international economy in which the acquisition and the strategic application of knowledge are what confer competitive advantage. In that regard, he may be described as Lewis Mark II.
