Cultural difference is popularly offered as the major lens through which new, more desirable, educational futures in the Pacific region need to be imagined. Advocates seek to re-introduce Pacific languages, knowledges and ways of knowing into formal schooling. This view is often voiced in response to the pervasiveness of what are seen as old colonial forms of schooling that linger in many parts of the region. The older forms of schooling, it is argued, are instrumental in culture and identity loss, language loss and more recently poor student learning outcomes and school drop out rates. In the spirit of further opening up the debates about new educational directions in the region this article examines some of the problems around the cultural difference perspective, including its grounding in a pedagogy of difference, the views of culture and identity it employs, its engagement with multiple axes of inequity based on class, location and gender to name but a few and the degree to which it has incorporated the views and desires of all educational interest groups. By way of concluding, an alternative 'critical' perspective is tentatively called for whereby the 'politics of knowing' that pervades both colonial and cultural difference models of schooling is brought more centrestage in Pacific systems of education, individual schools and even classrooms.
