Very few research universities date back to czarist Russia (and they have also been radically transformed by the Soviet system), and only a handful emerged in the recent 20 years. [...] to understand the present and the future of academic inquiry and research universities in Russia, it is crucial to understand the Soviet tradition of research in universities. [...] there were traditional universities established in pre-Soviet times such as Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University, which are large universities with a critical mass of world-class research faculty in many departments.
