Based on his action to open up stem cell research, to demand of his executive offices a respect for the integrity of science, and from his remarks to the National Academy of Sciences on the role that our great universities play in the process of discovery and economic innovation, there is a growing sense that President Obama understands the necessity of academic freedom and free inquiry, and that a new day has dawned. [...] when men have realized that time has upset many fighting faiths, they may come to believe even more than they believe the very foundations of their own conduct that the ultimate good desired is better reached by free trade of ideas - that the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market, and that truth is the only ground upon which their wishes safely can be carried out 259 U.S. 616(1919).
