The purpose of this article is to discuss the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) acoustical instrument measurement assurance program which consists of a Type Testing program to evaluate the performance of a manufacturer's acoustical instrument, periodic laboratory calibration, and pre- and post-field calibration of an acoustical instrument. Additional information is presented substantiating the recommended calibration time cycles for a laboratory calibration. Data are also presented concerning the accuracies that are obtainable from laboratories performing the calibration of acoustical instruments.
