In an era of convergent design evolution that is lessening obvious differences among automobile models within market segments, manufacturers have strong incentives to differentiate what might otherwise become commodity products. Since the automobile buying public has tired of tail fins and chrome grillwork, and since aerodynamic considerations are increasingly dictating styling decisions, automotive sound quality has become an important concern to car manufacturers.
