摘要

Interest in the development of the Solar Power Satellite (SPS) has been reawakened in recent years as technical, economic, and political developments have improved feasibility. This paper considers factors driving the reemergence of SPS, including recent projections of world energy consumption and carbon emissions; new, lower estimates of system development time and cost; near-term plans for orbital tests of key engineering concepts; and the potential for international public/private cooperative ventures to take up the challenge. The paper assesses the political implications of concems over human-induced global change coupled with increasing energy demand, which could give space-based power generation a higher profile in the debate over solutions to environmental problems.
