Globecomm Systems, a satellite communications firm based in Hauppauge, N.Y., is exploring new markets where satellite technology can be used to extend terrestrial communications to remote communities around the globe, said David Hershberg, Globecomm's chief executive.rnIn one example, Globecomm is helping to bring cel-rnlular telephone service to 200 rural villages in Alaska. Under contracts valued at $30 million, Globecomm has completed work on 50 of 250 satellite-based network sites that will be needed to link those communities with an Anchorage-based communications network operated by GCI, a company that offers voice, video and data communications services.rnThe villages connect to the GCI network via satellite, but signals from geostationary orbiting satellites above the equator are not always robust at extreme latitudes. Globecomm's network features base stations and media switching centers in each village that provide terrestrial wireless links when the satellite signal is unavailable, according to a Globecomm press release issued March 30.
