It is striking how the space position papers from the McCain and Obama campaigns are actually quite similar - both seem to lack any significant new vision for U.S. space policy. Realists know that campaign position papers are largely defensive documents where you avoid opening yourself up to attack. Neglecting a particular "space constituency" might open up a wedge whereby the other side counters with charges that you are "anti-space" or "anti" a particular NASA center or program or perhaps naive about the strategic importance of outer space.
