Long before Spaceport America took shape in the desert of southern New Mexico, Daniel Hicks was thinking about a spaceport there. "About 16 years ago, I started the Business Development Directorate, and at that time we were working with kind of the predecessor to the spaceport," he said, recalling his career at the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range. That was a concept then known as the Southwest Regional Spaceport, one of a number of sites proposed in the 1990s to host Lockheed Martin's VentureStar reusable launch vehicle.
