Insurance underwriter Lloyd's of London has asked Spacehab Inc. to return $17.7 million paid to the company for the loss of hardware aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, Spacehab officials said Jan. 20. Lloyd's is claiming that it should not have paid any of the insurance proceeds until NASA determined what amount, if any, it would pay Spacehab for the loss of the Research Double Module, Brian Harrington, Spacehab's chief financial officer said. Spacehab has filed a formal claim with NASA asking the U.S. space agency to pay it $87.7 million for the value of the laboratory module, which was lost when Columbia broke up re-entering the atmosphere Feb. 1, 2003, Harrington said.
