摘要

As aerospace executives and education experts decry the declining number of American students earning math and science degrees, a Texas high school teacher is doing his part to reverse the trend through a hands-on rocket-building program he says can be rolled out nationwide. For the past seven years, students in Brett Williams' Principles of Technology class at Fredericks-burg High School in central Texas have been learning rocket design from the ground up. These students have built 15 sounding rockets, each one bigger or more efficient than the one before. The latest of the Fredericksburg student-built rockets, the 4.5-me-ter-tall Redbird 10-H, is headed to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to launch a 16-kilogram science payload for Purdue University in June to an altitude of 30,000 meters.
