The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) might not get all of the money it wants next year for its industry-led architecture design team because of general budgetary pressures and a lack of clarity about the exact nature of the team's work, according to one U.S. lawmaker. U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), a member of the Senate Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee and one of Capitol Hill's leading missile defense critics, said the MDA has provided little information to justify the existence of the National Team. That coupled with the need to reduce the federal budget deficit could make the MDA's roughly $575 million request for the National Team in 2005 a target for reduction, Reed said in an interview March 31.
